OPI – Mariah Carey Liquid Sand Nail Polish Review

What better way to wrap up 2012 than with one last manicure Monday post! I am thrilled to share this new polish with you, not only because I just bought it, but because it is so different from any other polish I’ve ever tried.

On Boxing Day, Trade Secrets released the Mariah Carey by OPI collection. Amongst the requisite rich and shimmery swatches [in true Mariah character] I found four “liquid sand” lacquers. OPI claims that the liquid sand polish offers a never seen before matte, textured, shimmery finish. Obviously I was immediately sold.

The four liquid sand colours include: Can’t Let Go (a grape purple glitter), Get Your Number (a blue with various sizes of glitter), Stay The Night (a nearly black base with pink glitter) and The Impossible (a reddish pink base with hex and star glitter).

I think I chose the most subtle of the four – Stay The Night, but I’ll probably be back to try out a few more shades in the new year.

I really like the way the polish paints on my nails, it is thick but not tacky. I chose to use 3 coats [because I’m obsessive] but you could definitely get away with just two. As the polish warns, using a top coat will completely change the finish. I decided to follow the directions and skip it this time around. I will try again another time with a top coat just to see the difference – I know it will ruin the matte sandy finish but it might end up being interesting.

To be honest, when I first painted my nails with Stay The Night I wasn’t sold – the texture was too grainy for me and I wasn’t sure I liked the finish. After a few hours the texture softened a bit and the colour mellowed out a bit – now I’m in love! I guess good things come to those who have patience.

The entire OPI Mariah Carey collection is available at Trade Secrets. I’d love to hear your thoughts this collection!

Happy New Year friends – thanks for all your support in growing this blog to where it is today. See you in 2013, I can already tell it is going to be another great year!

Fabulous Finds Friday

I can’t believe how quickly this week has passed – maybe being on holidays has something to do with that. Today I wanted to share one of the most unique Christmas gifts I received this year. Yonanas.

Yo-what?! If you haven’t heard of it before, it turns fruit [primarily bananas] into ice cream. All you need is frozen fruit and the Yonanas machine and you’ll be able to eat ice cream any time of the day! It’s really easy – check it out.

I have tried a few combinations since I received Yonanas, so far my favourite is one that omits bananas. I used only the Presidents Choice 5 fruit combo [mango, pineapple, strawberries, grapes and honey dew]. It was tart and delicious. Next on the list would be a banana and mixed berry combination. Adding the bananas to the mix definitely gives the dish more sweetness.

My only criticism of Yonanas is that it takes a lot of muscle to push the frozen fruit through the tube. I think if you waited a bit for the fruit to melt this issue would probably be resolved – but I have no patience.

If you’d like your own Yonanas, Bed Bath and Beyond is selling the machine for $59.99 and they often offer a 20% discount with a printable coupon. I would suggest searching for one online before heading to the store.

I love being able to eat “ice cream” again [since I can’t have dairy] – and since this is made solely from fruit I feel absolutely no guilt eating this for breakfast.

On that note – I’m off to make some more frozen treats! Happy Friday!

Boxing Day Beauty Indulgences

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! I am so fortunate to have been able to spend time with all of my loved ones – I love the holidays because they bring everyone together.

Today I braved the boxing day crowds bright and early to get my hands on a few beauty products I’ve been eyeing. A few of these items are tried and true to me, others are new. If you haven’t been out yet – Sephora has some great deals for any beauty obsessed ladies [or men – no judgment]. Many cult favourites are on sale for only $12.  Check out the website if you feel more comfortable shopping from your couch. Here is what I brought home – all for a grand total of 102.83, including tax.

A Christmas Themed Mani Monday

Merry Christmas Eve everyone – hope you’ve made some cookies and stocked up on milk for Santa!

Today’s manicure is probably my most time intensive project yet – but it was totally worth it. I decided to decorate each nail with something Christmas themed. I didn’t do a tutorial because I kind of made it up as I went. Once you get down to it, each nail isn’t that tough to create – you just need a steady hand, lots of time and a good imagination [and a bit of tape for the Christmas tree!

Say hello to Santa, the Christmas tree and the strand of lights. Hope you like them!!!
