A 5'3 Perspective

Ottawa Art Battle

Although I am a big Sens fan [pretty awesome win last night eh?], I took a break from watching the playoff games this weekend to attend a more culturally stimulating event, Ottawa’s first ever Art Battle! This event has been occurring for many years in other Canadian cities but only just debuted this Sunday evening at Arts Court in Ottawa.

20130507-220118.jpg The concept is simple, three rounds, twelve artists, one winner. During the first two rounds artists compete for a place in the finals. The painters begin the rounds with palates of paint, a set of brushes or tools and an idea. After twenty minutes of concentration, the crowd votes by ballot for their favourite piece of art. The top two artists from the first two rounds earn a spot in the finals.

Here are some of the pictures I took during the event. It was really neat to be able to mingle and participate in the creation of art!

The final round consisted of four talented, local painters: Peter Akiki, Margo Bennetto, Hamid Ayoub, and ultimate victor, Mark Stephenson.

If you’d like to learn more about live competitive painting, upcoming events, and how to get involved, visit Art Battle Canada. The final event will be held in Toronto, where the individual city winners will compete to become Canada’s Next Top Painter – okay so I made up that title, but it seemed fitting!

Happy hump day friends!
