Manicure Monday: Leopard Print Double Accents

After two weeks of black and white manicures, I figured it was time to move onto to something a little more interesting. Using OPI French Quarter For Your Thoughts and You’re Such A Budapest, I created a double accent leopard print mani. manicure monday leopard double accent manicureThe leopard print design looks intricate and complicated, but it is arguably one of the easiest to complete with just a few pointers. First, paint your nail a solid base colour. Once this is completely dry, paint random, uneven dots all over nail. Using a third colour – I used the Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen, draw “c” and “u” shapes around the dots you painted before. Fill in any blank spaces with dots and lines in the third colour. leopard nail artIf you look closely you can see what I mean!

Fall Favourites: Beauty and Fashion

It’s time to pack up the shorts, sandals and summer beauty faves – fall is here and bringing deeper, richer hues along with it. Fall FavouritesA great jacket will keep you warm and dry through the damp, chilly days. This RED Valentino Bow Detailed Parka is subtle in colour but packs a real punch in the details. Keeping things classic and simple will make you feel stylish and confident this Fall.

Simple black and white fashion is trending for Fall. To keep your look fun and unique, wear a long lasting red lip to give off a sexy and polished vibe. This YSL Beauty Rouge Pur Couture glossy stain applies flawlessly and has some serious staying power. My go to colour is Rouge Laque – but head over to your local Sephora to test out a few different shades to see what suits you best. If $34 is a little steep for your budget, L’Oreal Paris Colour Caresse is a pretty awesome dupe, however, the colour selection is not as broad.

No matter the season, flawless skin is always in style. La Roche Posay offers a wide range of skincare products to help correct any imperfections that ail you.

With cool weather on the horizon, it is better to prevent chapped lips before they occur. Using a scrub a couple times a week will keep your lips looking soft and supple, not to mention the great canvas they will make for your deep red polish! This fresh Sugar Lip Polish is gentle and natural and does wonders for dry skin.

Gone are the days of bright nails, but that doesn’t mean you have to have boring nails. Pair this Chanel Vertigo polish with almost any other colour and create fabulous Fall friendly designs. The dark grey cream almost appears black in some light, but it is the shine and easy application that cannot be beat.

Now it is your turn to share your Fall fashion and beauty faves!

Ageless Derma Satin Lip Gloss Review

A couple of weeks ago I was given the opportunity to test out a  full sized pot of Satin Lip Gloss from Ageless Derma. I was intrigued by the product because it claims to have the properties of a lip chap but also provide a pop of colour, similar to a lipstick. In the past, I have found that glosses claiming to moisturize and add hue, usually fall short in at least one of those areas – it seems almost impossible to find a product that can deliver both.

The Satin Lip Gloss comes in twelve different shades, from nude to violet and everything in between. I chose a rose coloured gloss, Blossom, to sample.Ageless Derma Satin Lip GlossSatin Lip Gloss in BlossomThese lip colours are vitamin enriched and feature key ingredients like Castor Oil, Lanolin, Ceresin, Paraffin, Soybean Oil to moisturize and protect. The Ageless Derma website describes the collection as a moisturizing set of lip glosses made with aloe vera, green tea extract and a hint of refreshing peppermint oil.

I was very impressed with the texture and longevity of this gloss. I truly believe that it delivered in both adding colour and moisture to my lips. The hue wore well and only came off when I ate or drank, which is understandable as it isn’t a stain. When applied, the colour is very natural and enhances your lips while providing just a touch of shimmer. The more I used this gloss, the better my lips felt. Blossom Satin Lip GlossUnfortunately for anyone with long nails, applying this product with your fingers is absolutely impossible. The pot is small and it is hard to get product on the pads of your digits without getting loads of residue under your nails. For me, this is a huge limitation as I rarely [never] carry a lip brush with me when I am out. While the application is effortless with a brush, I would have prefered a tube type of applicator so that I can use this gloss on the go.

All in all, I really like this product and would highly recommend it! I received compliments every time I wore this gloss out of the house. At $15, Ageless Derma Satin Lip Gloss is extremely affordable and delivers great results. To purchase a pot of your own, visit: AglessDerma.com, you won’t be disappointed!

August Beauty Favourites

This time of the year really makes me remember my childhood. Gearing up to go back to school meant shopping, new supplies, new clothes and when I finally was old enough, new makeup. Today I want to share a few of my favourite beauty buys with you – just in case you are in the market for a little back to school nostalgia. In the near future I will share more depth product reviews of many items you see here.
August Faves

Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer – If you have dry and flaky skin, this primer is made for you. It will smooth any rough patches and leave your face looking matte and beautiful. Just a caveat – if you have very oily skin this primer may be too heavy and could cause breakouts.
YSL Babydoll Mascara – This is my go to mascara. I use it day in and day out. It plumps and separates my lashes like now other. If you’re interested in a full product review just click here.
Guerlain Lingerie De Peau – A foundation that applies effortlessly and provides moisture and medium coverage for the entire day – no reapplication required. Layer Lingerie De Peau over the Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer and be prepared to receive skin compliments all day long!
Ageless Derma Satin Lip Gloss* – This moisturizing gloss is made with aloe vera and green tea extract which makes avoiding cracked, dry lips a total breeze. It isn’t often you find a lip gloss/lip chap combo that actually delivers the results it promises. After a swipe of Ageless Derma Satin Gloss your lips will be thanking you.
Kate Somerville ExfoliKate – I received a tiny tester of this exfoliator and I was hooked. In just two minutes, twice a week you’ll notice a significant change in the appearance of your face. This product will rid your skin of dead cells and eliminate bacteria leaving you feeling fresh faced and beautiful.
Almay Lash Care Makeup Remover Pads* – I’ve been known to sleep in my mascara more often than I’d like to admit. In all honesty, finding cotton pads and makeup remover has always been a chore for me at night, but this gentle eye makeup remover allows me to skip this step entirely. These pre-soaked towelettes make taking off my mascara a breeze, consider my days of makeup removal excuses over!

Now it is your turn to share, what beauty products are at the top of your must buy list?

Manicure Monday – Dip Dye Tips

This weekend I treated myself to a few September fashion magazines. To my delight, beautiful nail art manicures were front and center in both issues, which left me no choice but to try one out. In Style featured a few do it yourself nail art instructionals using some of the best fall trends – so I happily obliged and gave one a try.Dip Dye TipsThe Dip-Dye Tips manicure featured both the negative space trend (as long as you use a nude base colour) and a deep blue ombre. You’ll need a makeup sponge, a pale or nude base colour , a deep blue and a top coat. I used Sephora by OPI Bare to Be Different as the neutral colour and OPI I Saw… You Saw… We Saw… Warsaw for the cobalt ombre effect. This manicure is fool proof as long as you follow a few easy steps.

Step 1: Prime your nail with a base coat – preferably a nail strengthener like OPI Nail Envy [product review here].
Step 2: Paint your nails completely using the nude/pink hue and allow it to dry completely.
Step 3: Using a makeup sponge, paint a layer of top coat on the tip and then follow with a layer of blue. Using the top coat first will dilute the colour which will give you the dip-dye look. Lightly dab the painted area on the sponge on your nail from the half way point to your tip, leave the cuticle area untouched. Allow your nails to dry completely before moving on to the next stage.
Step 4: Using a fresh makeup sponge [or the other side], paint the edge with blue polish and tab on the tip area of your nail to saturate the colour.
Step 5: Once the blue lacquer is completely dry, follow with a quick dry top coat to seal the manicure. I used essie good to go for this [product review here]. ellepottsie and In Style mani monday dip-dye tips manicureI am extremely happy with how this manicure turned out – it is very unique and intricate looking.

Manicure Monday: Nails Inc Leather Effect Polish Review

When a unique polish is on sale, there is absolutely nothing I can do to help it from ending up in my shopping basket. This is exactly what happened with the Nails inc Leather Effect lacquer that became part of my collection this weekend. Although I had no intention of trying another textured formula since I am usually disappointed with the results, but when I saw the colour, I couldn’t say no.

Shoreditch Lane is a dark, vampy, mulberry hue that dries to a leather textured finish. In my opinion, the application is a little tedious. The formula seems to get tacky very quickly and it is hard to achieve a smooth look with each application. I had to use three coats to cover up the streaks. Although this quick dry factor is an issue when painting, it is also one of the best attributes of the polish when it comes to the post manicure waiting period. Nails Inc Leather Effect manicure monday ellepottsieThe texture is interesting, I suppose it feels like a rough leather, and the colour is beautiful and rich. In all honesty though, I just don’t love the look. It reminds me of the times I paint my nails right before bed and wake up with a bed sheet pattern embedded into my manicure. Without adding the gold pyramid studs, this mani was just plain boring… and looked like a bit of a mess.

As with all other textured polishes, it is recommended that you skip the top coat. I followed the instructions, however, the tips of my nails are really chipping badly, I’ll have to touch them up daily to keep my digits looking presentable and professional.

Would I recommend this polish? Probably not. If you love a textured manicure then perhaps you’ll like this look – but I have come to the realization that I’m more of a nail art gal [surprise, surprise].

As always, if you’re wearing a fabulous manicure – send some pictures my way. I’m planning to do a reader manicure feature in the near future. Tag me in your mani pics on Instagram or Twitter.

Benefit Fake Up Concealer Product Review

Sometimes I come across a product that makes me feel like a brand has tapped my brain and extracted my deepest, darkest beauty dreams. Qualities I could only imagine in an item magically become a reality – this is how I felt when I found Benefit’s Fake Up Concealer. This ultra-hydrating crease control concealer is the answer to my prayers. For years I have longed for a product to turn my blotchy, blemish ridden skin into a beautiful work of art, yet most concealers enhance my dry spots making them more noticeable than choosing to go bare. Benefit Fake UpWhen I stumbled across Fake Up on  a routine trip to Sephora, I couldn’t help but give it a try. In typical benefit fashion, the concealer is offered in only three shades – light, medium and dark. I’m quite pale but I found the light to be just a tad fair for my skin, which means there is hope for you snow white beauties out there! The medium shade matches my skin flawlessly even without spending time blending. fake up product reviewThe concealer is comprised of two parts – the inner pigmented area (light defusing and full coverage) and the outer circle (a hydrating formula filled with vitamin E and apple seed extract). It is easy to apply as the goal is to use both parts of the product equally. I rub my finger on the tip of the concealer which mixes the hydrator and the concealer together and then dab on my problem areas.

If full coverage is the look you desire, Fake Up might not be the concealer for you. I find it to be just slightly more sheer than other brands, however, it is buildable. For me, the hydrating aspect is what makes this product irreplaceable. My blemishes and dry patches are being concealed and moisturized all at the same time! Fake Up is the perfect product for someone with dry or dehydrated skin as it will assist in the repairing process.

Some may feel that the price is a bit steep for such a small amount of product. For me, $29 a tube is a small price to pay for smooth, flawless looking skin. If you’re not sure that Fake Up is right for you, I recommend testing it out using Sephora’s extremely customer friendly return policy, which allows to you to return any product, in almost any condition, with no questions asked.

Benefit’s Fake Up concealer is high my list of essential daily use products. The coverage is ample and the hydration is out of this world. This concealer is exactly what my skin has always dreamed of – and the cute disco-esque packaging is a great bonus which makes it easy to throw in your purse and apply whenever and wherever you need!

Have you come across a beauty product that you feel was made for you?

Product Review – Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Babydoll

If I were stranded on an island and could only bring one beauty item with me, without a doubt it would be a tube of mascara. Maybe I am vain, but adding a touch of mascara amps up any look and takes only a few seconds to apply.

I have been quite loyal to Givenchy over the past few months, but when I saw the new YSL Babydoll Mascara – I knew I needed to give it a try.

YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Babydoll

YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Babydoll

Available at Sephora, this mascara retails for $36 CAD, only a dollar more than my go to Givenchy Noir Couture 4 in 1. YSL describes this product as:

What it is:
A unique mascara with a patented formula that provides defined volume, lash-by-lash separation, and up-to-24-hour wear.

What it does:
Baby Doll creates a full open-eye effect by lifting and separating lashes. The patented formula creates long-lasting volume and intense color that is evenly dispersed with no flakes, clumps, or smudges for up to 24 hours.

What else you need to know:
Reach every lash, including the baby ones for a full fringe effect. The brush has duo-length bristles that adapt to all lash types, separating, coating, and multiplying lashes for defined volume.

More volume, lash separation and 24 hour wear. These are all essential qualities necessary in an outstanding mascara, but do the claims live up to their expectations?

In my opinion YSL hit the nail on the head with this formula. The product is thin and wet and is a dream to apply for those reasons, however, it is so important to wait until each layer is completely dry before adding another. I typically wear at least three coats of mascara and I will wait at least 30 seconds before apply each. The brush has tiny, stiff bristles to ensure that each lash gets coated in mascara. Babydoll is available in black and wheedler brown, but neither colour option is waterproof [which is a downfall in my opinion]. Luckily, YSL has created a non water proof mascara that can really stand the test of time – as long as you aren’t completely submerged in water you don’t need to worry about looking like a complete mess. I have slept in this mascara on numerous occasions [slap my wrist] and I wake up with perfect lashes.

All in all I am very happy with this product – I’d love to see a waterproof version, however, until then that isn’t a show stopper for me. Below are a few eye-catching [ha I’m so PUNny] snaps. You can be the judge!

Which one would you choose?
