Manicure Monday: Halloween Nails

The Halloween countdown is on, only 10 days to go! I’ll admit that I have given no thought to my costume for this year – but my nails are definitely feeling the spooky spirit! This manicure is simple and fun. I’ll include a tutorial and a list of products used so you can give it a try! Halloween ManicureUsing essie blanc as a base coat, paint each nail entirely white. Once this base is dry, use a dotting tool (I use this Quo brush and dotting tool set, which can be found at Shoppers Drugmart) to create two black dots for eyes near your cuticle. Next use the smaller end of the tool to create the nose by painting two dots attached to each other. Finally, use the brush to paint five thin lines from just after the middle of your nail all the way to the tip. Allow the black to dry completely before adding a top coat to avoid colour bleeding.

Manicure Monday: Chanel 601 Mysterious

When i came across the new Fall 2013 Chanel lacquers last week, I was a little disappointed. Of the three colours, two are completely over done. 589 Elixir is a red/pink combo with a bit of sheen – yawn, and 591 Alchimie, which is a slightly more green version of 531 Peridot. The third colour in the set caught my eye – 601 Mysterious. It appeared to be a deep olive green when I first saw the bottle in store – similar to the Khaki Green from the Les Khaki Collection which launched years ago, which is next to impossible to find for a reasonable price. Chanel Fall 2013This weekend was so crazy that I didn’t even get a chance to take the polish out of the box until Sunday night. As you can see from the picture above – it very dark, almost grey looking. Mysterious – fitting name, this was not the khaki olive green I was hoping for. I could have sworn this was not what I had seen before buying it. As with most Chanel polishes, the formula is easy to work with and two coats ensures opacity, but I am not sold on the colour. When I look quickly at my nails, they look black. With a closer examination, especially under bright sunlight, the dustiness makes it a deep grayish green. I am not sure if I like this polish. It is a nice vamp hue and will look great for Fall, however, it isn’t what I was expected and because of that, I am disappointed. Mani MondayI tried to add some studs to my mani for extra appeal, but my lackluster sentiments are obvious by just looking at the precision (or lack of) of my application.

Manicure Monday: Tiny Triangle Tips

When the essie Fall 2013 launched, I couldn’t stop swooning over After School Boy Blazer. Sure I have a few deep blues in my collection, but this one is so dark it almost appears black – until you take a close look, then the complexity of the hue will have you in awe. I finally purchased this shade last week and knew that it would combine perfectly with essie No Place Like Chrome to create a fun, futuristic and geometric nail art mani. essie nail art ellepottsie manicure MondayAfter two base layers of No Place Like Chrome, I used the weight of the brush to paint V shapes at the top of each finger and then filled in the bottom to create this look. Remember to take your time and breathe to keep a steady hand.

Now that the new Fall colours are readily available in stores, which hue are you coveting for the season?

Manicure Monday: Galaxy Nails

Inspired by outer space, these dark but shimmery nails have been making quite a splash in the blog world. After watching a couple tutorials, like these (one and two), I couldn’t wait another day to try them out myself. I’m a huge fan of manicures that look complicated and unique but are easy to achieve – this is one of them.Galaxy Nails galaxy nailsFor this manicure you’ll need quite a few different polishes: a black for the base, then you’ll apply a dark blue, followed by purple, followed by white – using a sponge to dab the colours on. Once those layers have dried, you’ll need a translucent and sparkly polish to layer on each nail, followed by a polish with large silver glitter pieces. I highly recommend watching one the tutorials above to see how this manicure is achieved before ruling it out for its complexity.

Manicure Monday: Leopard Print Double Accents

After two weeks of black and white manicures, I figured it was time to move onto to something a little more interesting. Using OPI French Quarter For Your Thoughts and You’re Such A Budapest, I created a double accent leopard print mani. manicure monday leopard double accent manicureThe leopard print design looks intricate and complicated, but it is arguably one of the easiest to complete with just a few pointers. First, paint your nail a solid base colour. Once this is completely dry, paint random, uneven dots all over nail. Using a third colour – I used the Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen, draw “c” and “u” shapes around the dots you painted before. Fill in any blank spaces with dots and lines in the third colour. leopard nail artIf you look closely you can see what I mean!

Manicure Monday: Black and White Nail Art

Labour Day weekend always reminds me of new beginnings. Although I am not going back to school [and haven’t for quite a while], the summer to fall transition is exciting and opportunity filled.

As much as I love deep and full bodies nail polish hues during this time of year, I decided to try something a little different. Black and white has been making a serious splash when it comes to Fall fashion, which inspired today’s geometric mani. Fall Manicure essie blanc black and white maniI used essie blanc [three coats to ensure opacity], Revlon Art Expressionist in Pastel Punk [side 2 – grey] and Chanel Black Satin [219].

Enjoy the rest of your long weekend and transition into Fall. Good things are just around the corner, I can feel it!
