Fabulous Finds Friday: My New Beauty Essentials

If you shop at Sephora and have a Beauty Insider card, you may want to start adding items to your shopping cart while reading this. Until Sunday (or Monday if you have achieved VIB status) everything at Sephora is 15% off. This is not a joke – and rarely ever happens so I suggest taking full advantage of the discount and go stock up on your beauty essentials. Here are a few of my favourite items that I just can’t seem to live without lately.

ellepottsie beauty essentials1. L’Occitane Hand Cream – something about the texture and scent of these lotions makes them unbeatable. With a variety of subtle scents, there is a cream for everyone. The formula is long lasting and a tiny application will give you silky smooth hands for hours.

2. Ole Henriksen Sheer Transformation – My new go to moisturizer. I cannot give this product enough praise, to this day it is the only face cream that can hold up to my parched skin without causing breakouts. I’m in love. This moisturizer is light and blends in easily and lasts all day.

3. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar – These fun mini glosses are just what you need to amp up your look. They are high shine and very bold – be warned they are a bit sticky and a little goes a very long way.

4. Ole Henriksen Invigorating Night Gel – This exfoliation night mask feels a bit slimy upon application but it dries quickly and has done wonders for my skin. I never imaged a product could brighten, tighten and clear up my skin the way this gel has. Don’t worry about the tingly feeling at the beginning, it just means it is working [and it goes away quickly]. This has become my favourite before bed activity.

5. YSL Faux Cils Babydoll – Expect a review next week, but until then I’ll leave you with one comment. You will NOT be disappointed, especially if you’re on a quest for lash separation and serious length.

6. Phyto Phytocyane Densifying Shampoo – Since I began using this [interspersed between a colour saving shampoo] I have noticed fewer lost locks and mush less breakage. If hair loss isn’t an issue for you I would still recommend checking out the other shampoos Phyto has to offer – they seem to be the only brand in hair care that can live up to their claims.

Have a wonderful weekend friends!

Ask A Beauty Blogger: Sharing My Everyday Makeup Routine

Ask A Beauty BloggerIn all honesty, I never expected to be asked this question – but I am always happy and willing to share.

ellepottsie beauty routine

When it comes to my regular beauty routine – I try to keep things simple and natural. I can easily get ready for the day in under 15 minutes. Anything longer is too much of a chore for me to do before work.

ellpottsie makeup routineI am definitely a creature of habit and typically stick to specific products that I find work best for me.

Step 1: After washing my face I lather on a generous layer of moisturizer. Currently I am using First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream which helps with dry, parched skin. To be honest – I am not in love with it and likely won’t repurchase, I am pretty sure it is aggravating my skin and making me break out. I am going to continue using it for a few more weeks to see if my skin just needs to get used to it.

Step 2: Conceal any and all imperfections. I use [and absolutely love the coverage] CoverFX Cream Concealer. It comes in a wide variety of tones and shades with options for very pale and very dark skin. I always use my finger to stipple the concealer to build up the coverage. If you aren’t sure how to stipple click here to learn more. Depending on the condition of my skin I often don’t use any other face products. If my skin is uneven I will use CoverFX Pressed Mineral Foundation – for full coverage, or Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream – for a lighter look (which I reviewed here).

Step 3: Contour. To me, this is an essential part of my routine. All the steps I use were outlined in a previous Ask A Beauty Blogger post, along with a diagram – just click here for the details. The products I use are; bareMinerals All Over Face Colour in warmth (for bronzing) using the Sephora #49 angled brush, Benefit high beam illuminator, and bareMinerals blush in laughter (which is unfortunately no longer available).

Step 4: Tame your brows. Since I have quite full brows I use a clear brow gel to keep everything in place. A good professional brow shaping will have a huge impact on your overall look – personally I find threading gives me the best shape and lasts longest.

Step 5: Get friendly with your mascara – seriously. For daytime makeup, I don’t curl my lashes – just a personal preference – but I do use at least two [and three and four] coats of Givenchy Noir Couture mascara (reviewed here). Allow your lashes to dry between each layer and make sure you take your time separating and coating each one. This is probably the longest part of my routine.

Step 6: Swipe your lips with a clear lip balm and get on with you day. Rosebud Salve has always been my go to as it is long lasting and prevents chapping.

Easy peasy, right?

If you’d like your question answered next week, head over here to send me a request.

Hope In A Jar Product

As promised, today I am reviewing philosophy’s Hope In A Jar.

My container of Hope In A Jar - 60ml size

I bought this facial moisturizer after reading numerous rave reviews in magazines. Unfortunately, I do not share the same enthusiasm for this product. I must admit, I had very high hopes but I was immediately turned off by the design of the container. To me, facial moisturizers should not come in a pot, they should be pumped out. I dislike putting my fingers in the jar because I feel like bacteria will start to get into my product – and then on to my face. If philosophy changed the container to something that was dispensed, I would likely have a much more favourable review.

My advice to you; use this product sparingly – if you buy it – the whipped, milky lotion does not absorb well into my skin. I have very dry skin and I find if I put too much on my face looks greasy, but when I only use a little bit I am left with dry patches. The scent is anything but pleasant – I can’t even describe it. Luckily the foul odor seems to vanish once it is absorbed.

Texture of the product.

I wish I could agree with the masses and tell you that I loved this product and will never buy anything else – but truthfully, I probably won’t buy it ever again. I have had this container longer than I am willing to publicly admit and I am only just passing the half way mark. I try to use it consistently to see if prolonged use will have positive effects on my skin but I have not noticed any difference yet [except for a few extra breakouts – probably from my fingers and germs being put into the jar].

With that being said I do not recommend this product if you have dry skin, it is much too greasy and does not absorb enough to smooth my patches of dryness. Feel free to check out the reviews on the Sephora site to see what others have to say. I am just telling you my opinion – which is to find a better product for the price. I have yet to find a go to moisturizer; I was really hoping that Hope In A Jar would be it… and so the search continues.

I’ve got a fun nail tutorial for tomorrow. Here is a preview of stage one – feel free to follow along and paint your nails an opaque colour tonight so they are good and dry to finish tomorrow. You’ll need tape and another colour that will complement whichever base colour you choose. I used American Apparel’s L’Esprit for my base.

The Wish List

Earlier this week I received another 10% discount at Sephora [to help fuel my beauty addiction], so I decided to peruse the website to pick out some new products! I am always amazing at how many different options we have when it comes to beauty. I always find it so hard to distinguish between what I need [kind of] and what I want. Below are my top 10 Wish List items [about half needs and half wants]!

#10 – Dior DiorShow 360 Mascara

To be quite honest, I will probably never buy this mascara. I cannot convince myself that having a motor in my mascara is necessary. I still find myself checking it out every time I see it though. I would love to try it to see if the spinning really makes a difference.

#9 – FairyDrops Scandal Queen Mascara

http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P281302&categoryId=B10

The only reason this product is near the bottom of my list is because I just bought Tarte’s Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara [review coming soon] last week so it is hard to justify buying another right away. Despite my reasoning, this mascara looks incredible with its patented [in Japan] wand design claiming to catch and curl ever single lash while adding length and volume. This product is only available in US Sephora stores but I wonder if I can order online?

#8 – Tarte for True Blood™ Limited-Edition LipSurgence™ Natural Lip Tint

I am among the few who do NOT enjoy this resurgence of vampire movies, books, and TV shows, however, I love the pale skin and dark red lips trend that it has brought with it. I am dying to try Tarte’s take on the Vampire red lip stain, I have read nothing but praise for this limited edition product.

#7 – Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 – Oil Free

http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P140906&categoryId=C10550&shouldPaginate=true

You will never find me using anything but Laura Mercier’s Secret Concealer, it is by far the best I have found. A little goes a long way and you are able to achieve full coverage for those problem areas while still looking natural. It only makes sense that my satisfaction with the concealer would push me towards this oil free tinted moisturizer. I find that near the end of summer my skin is at its best and I do not need as much coverage, this may be the perfect “foundation” to transition me into the Fall.

#6 – Nars Highlighting/Bronzing Blush Duo

I love the Orgasm/Laguna colour combination that Nars is offering for a limited time. My favourite blush [which looks amazing on every skin tone] combined with a great bronzer is perfect for traveling or carrying in your purse. You never know when you will need to add a little glow!

# 5 – St. Tropez Everyday Gradual Tan For Body

I am always nervous to try self tanning, but since I am naturally pale it is something I like to try once in a while. This St. Tropez Gradual Tan is a lot less intimidating because the colour builds as you use it. This seems like it will make streaks and missed spots a lot easier to avoid.

#4 – Oscar Blandi Pronto Invisible Volumizing Dry Shampoo Spray

I have tried a couple different kinds of dry shampoo, but this is the first one I’ve seen that is meant to add volume as well as mask unclean hair. Not only does it meet the two criteria my hair needs [when I’ve gone one too many days of just “body showering”] but it is also invisible, unlike most dry shampoos that come out white and are extremely noticeable on dark hair. I must confess I “test” this dry shampoo pretty much every time I walk into Sephora!

#3 – Marc Jacobs Oh, Lola!

If the beautiful bottle isn’t enough to make you want to try this new Marc Jacobs perfume then the flirty and elegant scent will win you over. My skin does not react well to Marc Jacobs Lola perfume but Oh, Lola! keeps me coming back for more.

#2 – OPI Urban Ballerina Collection – Leotard Optional

I love this colour! It is neutral but with a twist of shimmer. I usually am drawn to matte finishes but this feminine shade has me captivated.

#1 – Philosophy Kiss Me Exfoliating Lip Scrub

There is nothing better than having full, soft, shiny lips. Unfortunately my pout will never resemble Angelina Jolie’s, but at least I can check off the last two by using Philosophy’s Kiss Me Exfoliating Lip Scrub. I have had my eye on this lip treatment for months now. I love that you can feel the grains working to smooth and moisturize your lips!

And there you have it! I can’t wait to go shopping to restock my make-up bag – as if it isn’t already overflowing!
